Hazelnut – the shrub with the magical wood

Thehazelnut– Latin corylus avellana – belongs to the birch family (betulaceae).

The hazelnut bush's natural range extends across large parts of Europe to Asia Minor. Numerous cultivated varieties have been bred from the wild forms worldwide. The hazelnut's importance as a food remains unbroken. Over one million hazelnuts were harvested in 2021.

The deciduous hazelnut bush grows over 6 meters tall and can reach an age of 100 years.

The flowering period lasts from February to April. Initially, greenish-yellow, male clusters, up to 10 centimeters long, form. The inconspicuous female flowers consist of an ovary with a stigma. Their red stigmas make them recognizable as flowers. Since they contain no nectar, pollination occurs not through insects but through the male flowers. This produces the ever-popular hazelnuts.

Foliage only begins to emerge after flowering. The green leaves are round to heart-shaped. They contain valuable nutrients such as phenols, tannins, and silica. The young leaves are used to make spinach. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow to yellowish-brown.

The fruit of the hazel bush – the hazelnut – is considered food for the brain and nerves. Hazelnuts contain unsaturated fatty acids, many B vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, calcium, and high-quality proteins. The fiber and phytochemicals also support good digestion. The nuts are harvested in September and October.

According to folklore, a key hangs on the hazel bush, unlocking access to the earth's treasure chests. Hazel wood possesses a special ability to conduct energy and power currents. Dowsers make their rods from the flexible branches. A hazel bush planted in front of a house is said to draw off harmful earth rays and ward off storms. Simply magical!
