Oregano – ein Vielkönner unter den Kräutern!

Oregano – a versatile herb!

Oregano is a universally loved herb. It absorbs the warmth and strength of summer, which we benefit from year-round.

The medicinal herb oregano is used as a spice in many Italian dishes, with dark meat, and in sausage production. Its flavor is tart and strong.

In folk medicine, oregano is valued for stomach cramps, cramps, diarrhea, and flatulence, as well as for coughs, insomnia, palpitations, and nervous weakness. A powerful all-rounder!

Oregano can have a digestive effect in cases of gastrointestinal discomfort. The tannins and bitter compounds in oregano have an antispasmodic effect on the gastrointestinal tract. These purely herbal drops can have an expectorant effect in cases of cough.

These healing properties are based on the antiseptic effect of thymol and its invigorating influence on the nervous system.

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), oregano is used for digestive problems, asthma, coughs, cramps, vertigo, and rheumatoid arthritis. Oregano strengthens the stomach qi and dispels cold and dampness.

An American study examined oregano in detail. The oregano plant was found to have excellent properties against bacteria and everyday environmental toxins. Oregano can help the body eliminate toxins. Oregano is helpful in strengthening the metabolism.

Oregano is also said to have antioxidant properties. This medicinal herb can protect the body from oxidative stress. So-called "free radicals" cause cell damage. Our body counteracts these effects with antioxidant systems. With a sufficient intake of antioxidants, you support these systems. They help the body defend itself against "free radicals." Oxidative stress leads to, among other things, cardiovascular diseases and immune system disorders.

Oregano is known in folk medicine for controlling fungal infections (e.g., Candida fungus). Oregano was already relied upon in the Middle Ages for treating fungal infections.

Here are a few suggestions for using oregano that you can easily make yourself:

How do you dry oregano?

Oregano unfolds its full aroma when in full bloom. Cut the flowering plant tips approximately 20 cm below the flower head. Dry the bunched oregano hanging in the shade. Drying temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) will cause the essential oils to be lost. Glass containers are recommended for storage.

Herbal pillow made from oregano:

Want to make your own oregano vinegar or oregano oil? Here's how:

Pour wine vinegar or neutral-tasting oil (rapeseed and sunflower oils work well) over whole oregano sprigs. Simply let them stand at room temperature. The flavor will intensify with longer steeping.
