The leaves of the rockrose produce a sticky secretion. The oily, amber-scented resin oozes out at high temperatures. In the past, the secretion, called "ladanum," was harvested with the help of goats. The animals were driven through the rockrose fields. The sticky resin clung to the goats' leg hair. After shearing, the resin was washed out of the goats' hair with hot water. To this day, labanum is still an ingredient in perfume production. Rockrose/ladanum was mentioned as early as ancient times in the Book of Genesis, chapters 37:25 and 43:11.
The rockrose (cistus incanus) is a hybrid of the female rockrose and the curly rockrose. It is a distinct species and belongs to the rockrose family (cistaceaea).
One striking feature of the rockrose is that each flower opens for only one day and is shed the following night. This floral display is repeated every day throughout the summer.
In its natural habitat, the rockrose grows on humus-poor, stony, and dry soils. Under extreme heat, the bushy subshrub grows up to 80 cm tall. The leaves, with their distinctive veins, are finely hairy and green to gray-green in color. The flowers bear striking yellow stamens. These are surrounded by very thin, cupped florets up to 7 cm in size. The colors of the flowers range from white to pale pink to pink.
