The rosemary plant originally grew near the coasts of southern countries and on islands. Rosemary's high value is reflected in colorful traditions. The ancient Greeks offered rosemary to the goddess Aphrodite as a symbol of love and beauty. In the first centuries AD, rosemary was cultivated by monks and nuns in monasteries and thus introduced to Central Europe. Rosemary literally accompanied people throughout their life cycle, from birth to death:
- Rosemary was placed in the cradles of small children for protection,
- used it for smoking and as a medicine,
- put and still puts a rosemary branch – as a symbol of fertility – in the bridal bouquet,
- To neutralize the smell of the corpse, he placed woven rosemary wreaths around the deceased and
- as a sign of mourning and hope for return to gravesites.
The rosemary plant has a strong root system, which allows it to establish itself firmly in rocky soils. When grown wild, the rosemary plant can grow up to two meters tall. The leaves are needle-shaped and evergreen. They curl slightly downward at the sides. The upper surface is gray-green. The underside is covered with whitish hairs. The narrow leaves are evergreen. Rosemary has a strong, aromatic fragrance.
Under favorable weather conditions, rosemary begins to bloom as early as late autumn. If the winter months are mild, it blooms until spring. Rosemary blooms delightfully with light blue labiate flowers.
