In terms of quantity, the ingredients in our hop tincture are predominantly hop bittering substances, which reach 15 to 30 percent in the hop cones and 50 to 80 percent in the hop glands.
As early as the eighth century, Arab physicians described the effects of hops. From the ninth century onward, hops were cultivated in England and Germany. In the following centuries, hops' importance grew, certainly aided by the fact that monasteries recognized their value in beer production.
A less well-known non-medicinal use of hops is that hop cones were often placed behind books in libraries because they regulate humidity well and also repel insects. In recent years, hop asparagus has become a popular vegetable in spring.
Hops are thought to have originated in Eastern Europe. They grow wild in damp areas, alder groves, and riverbanks.
As a dioecious, right-winding plant, hops typically reach a height of three to six meters. The female plants produce hop cones as two- to four-centimeter-long, greenish-yellow inflorescences or fruit clusters.
