To produce these very valuable drops we use the plant with flowers.
The Latin name "Alchemilla," meaning "little alchemist," likely derives from the Arabic "alkimiya." This name refers to the water droplets that emerge in the morning through guttation, which coalesce into a large pearl at the base of the leaf. Often mistakenly called "dewdrops," alchemists considered this "heavenly water" to be unique and attributed special healing powers to these drops.
Lady's mantle reproduces asexually—it produces viable seeds without fertilization. Thus, there is no genetic mixing, and all offspring look like the parent plant.
The semi-rosette perennial, up to 50 cm tall, has 7 to 9 semicircular basal leaves. They are reminiscent of the cloak worn by the Virgin Mary in holy images. Hence the name lady's mantle, also known as "Mother of God's Mantle," "Virgin's Mantle," or "All Women Hail." Its yellow flowers are very small and occur in dense inflorescences.
