The turmeric plant belongs to the ginger family. It grows up to one meter tall. Its reed-like leaves are light green. The rhizome is richly branched, and the very large, stalked leaves are basal with oblong-elliptical venation. Small, yellow-lipped flowers sit in pale green bracts. The uppermost bracts are often tinged with purple.
