English oak – this tree stands like no other for power, hardness and strength

TheEnglish oak– Latin quercus robur – belongs to the beech family (fagaceae).

There are over 600 oak species worldwide. Around 26 species are native to Europe.

Initially, humans used oak bark and fruit to secure their food supply. Acorns were an important source of fodder for pigs. This form of feeding was only replaced by potato waste at the end of the 18th century.

Acorn flour served as a flour substitute in times of need. Acorn coffee was prepared to strengthen sick and very elderly people. The acorns are gently dried and their shells removed. They are then roasted until brown. They are then ready to be ground. To make a cup of acorn coffee, boil 1 teaspoon with 1/4 liter of water. Strain the brew and refine it with milk or cocoa. Acorns are harvested in the fall. They fall from the trees when ripe.

Due to its tannins, the bark is ideal as a base for sitz baths and douches. Tannins have an astringent effect and can protect mucous membranes from further irritation. Folk medicine uses it for hemorrhoids, rectal fistulas, and vaginal infections. The bark is preferably collected from the young branches in March.

Bark, leaves, and acorns are generally washed thoroughly before use. The high concentration of tannins and tannins makes these parts inedible or even poisonous. Buds, young leaves, and flowers are nontoxic and edible untreated.

Over time, the qualities of hard, durable oak wood for woodworking became recognized. It is excellent for construction, shipbuilding, and hydraulic engineering. Wine, cognac, and whiskey are preferably stored in oak barrels to enhance their flavor.
