Fossil finds of birch trees indicate their presence over 48 million years ago. In the Northern Hemisphere, the birch thrives on both dry and moist sandy and boggy soils. It has few environmental requirements. It prefers a location that is not shaded, as the birch likes to stretch toward the sun. The silver birch is a light-loving tree species.
The silver birch is characterized by its decorative, white bark. With age, the smooth, white bark peels off in narrow, papery strips. The older the tree gets, the more the bark cracks. The cracks are no longer white, but dark brown to black.
