The name “wild marjoram” commonly used here is misleading, since oregano is not a wild form of marjoram.
Oregano originates from the Mediterranean region and is a typically Mediterranean plant. Oregano means "ornament of the mountains" or "mountain delight" in Greek. It loves the sun and thrives in nutrient-rich soils.
Historically, oregano was used in ancient times to treat infections and heal wounds. Early Romans used oregano oil as a disinfectant.
Oregano belongs to the species-rich herb family Lamiaceae. Oregano is closely related to the genus Origanum, which consists of 40 species. Wild oregano thrives in dry meadows, forest edges, and in mountains up to the subalpine level. Oregano is a perennial, typically herbaceous plant and forms vigorous runners. Its square, upright stems can reach a height of 60 cm and become slightly woody towards the base. The rather small leaves are slightly hairy, ovate, and dotted on the underside.
From midsummer until September, oregano bears white to pale pink flowers in umbel-like to panicle-like inflorescences.
Smooth, brown nuts, so-called achenes, ripen from the flowers.
