Originally from Central Europe, its current range extends to Asia and North America. The stinging nettle prefers nutrient-rich, nitrogen-rich soils with sufficient moisture. It is therefore often found near riverbanks, ponds, and pools.
Urtica diocia belongs to the nettle family (Urticaceae). As a perennial, hardy herb, it can grow over 3 meters tall. A robust rhizome with numerous, smaller, branched roots develops underground. The familiar nettle leaves are heart-shaped, tapered, and distinctively serrated. The stems and leaves are covered with fine hairs containing formic acid. If the plant is touched, the hairs break off and pierce the skin like needles. The formic acid is released, causing the familiar burning sensation and the formation of red wheals.
During the flowering period from June to October, inconspicuous, whitish flowers bloom in panicles. The resulting green nut fruits contain one egg-shaped seed.
