Ribwort plantain owes its German name "Wegerich" (plantain) to its frequent occurrence along roadsides. The Latin genus name "plantago" also refers to this: neither the footprints of passing people's soles (Latin "planta") nor the wheels of wagons could prevent the spread of the ribwort plantain plant. On the contrary, the seeds stuck to the soles and were thus carried further.
Botanically, ribwort plantain belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. Its relatives include plants used in folklore, such as foxglove and speedwell.
This plant is also known as ribwort plantain, medicinal plantain, ribwort plantain, wound plantain, field herb, lungwort and sheep's tongue.
The perennial, hardy ribwort plantain reaches a height of up to 60 cm, both above ground and underground, with a powerful rootstock.
Its mid-green leaves, arranged in a basal rosette, grow up to 20 cm long. A distinctive feature of ribwort plantain leaves are five to seven parallel leaf veins that converge at the pointed end.
Ribwort plantain blooms from May to September. Sturdy flower stalks with an elongated, oval spike at the end grow from the rosette described above. Delicate filaments and whitish-yellow anthers are found in the spikes. Capsules, each containing two brownish-red seeds, develop from the flower spikes.
