The saw palmetto belongs to the palm family (Arecaceae). It is also known as the Sabal palm or dwarf palm. As a short-stemmed bush palm, it is partially undergrowth under other trees. It can withstand both increased humidity and drought. It is known for its resilience and is highly resistant to pests and harmful environmental influences. Even after a fire, the saw palmetto can resprout vibrantly. Ideal conditions for it to live up to 500 years!
The saw palmetto grows bushily up to a height of 3 meters. The leaves are yellow-green and sharply serrated. The leaf stalks are prickly. The original name Sabal serrulata means "little saw" in South America and describes the prickly leaf stalks. The fan-shaped leaves can consist of up to 24 individual leaves. Small, ivory-colored flowers sit closely together in a cob-like arrangement. The fruits of the saw palmetto are single-seeded drupes. Their surface is smooth, oily, and dark brown. When ripe, the fruits can take on a dark red color. The flavor of the fruits is described as nutty, sometimes even vanilla-like. The largest component of the plant's constituents is fatty oil, which contains triglycerides and free fatty acids. Other important components are phytosterols, polysaccharides, flavonoids, and carotenoids.
