The plant originates from tropical regions of Asia. It thrives in Indonesia and Australia. In Asian folk medicine, cat's whiskers are considered an effective medicinal plant. Cat's whiskers only arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. In the Netherlands, the plant was first mentioned in medicinal terms in 1905.
Cat's whiskers belong to the mint family. It is a perennial herbaceous plant. The perennial cat's whiskers grow up to 80 cm tall. The genus name "Orthosiphon" comes from the Greek and means "upright reed." Opposite leaves grow on the square stem. These leaves are coarsely toothed and tapered.
The cat's whiskers produce white to pale violet labiate flowers. The flowers are arranged in whorls. Long stamens grow from them. They look like a cat's whiskers. The cat's whiskers get their name from these four stamens.
Mature cat's whiskers can grow into sizeable shrubs. The root system tends to become woody and thick.
