Around 50 years ago, it conquered several parts of Europe. Here, it gained a reputation as a natural pesticide, among other things. It repels pest insects without harming beneficial insects, humans, or domestic animals. Its beneficial plant parts are valued both in agriculture and medicine.
The name neem comes from Sanskrit and means "reliever of illness." It is of great importance in Ayurvedic medicine. The leaves, bark, and oil extracted from the seeds have been used for over 2,000 years.
The neem tree is a fast-growing, mostly evergreen tree. Mature neem trees grow up to 20 m tall and produce up to 50 kg of stone fruits. The 2.5 cm long stone fruits resemble olives and contain one, sometimes two, hard-shelled seeds. Its flowers are small, white, and emit a jasmine-like scent. During periods of drought, it sheds its leaves to protect itself from drought damage.
