Birch buds – from the tree of youth and freshness!
Fossil finds of birch trees indicate their presence over 48 million years ago. In the Northern Hemisphere, the birch thrives on both dry and moist sandy and boggy soils. It has few environmental requirements. It prefers a location that is not shaded, as the birch likes to stretch toward the sun. The silver birch is a light-loving tree species.
The silver birch is characterized by its decorative, white bark. With age, the smooth, white bark peels off in narrow, papery strips. The older the tree gets, the more the bark cracks. The cracks are no longer white, but dark brown to black.
The silver birch reaches a height of up to 30 meters, growing at an annual rate of up to 45 centimeters. The treetop is light and multi-tiered, making it an elegant, graceful tree.
The leaves are light green until autumn. Before the tree sheds their leaves, they turn golden yellow. The following spring—at the time of flowering—new growth begins.
The male flowers form in the fall. They overwinter and produce the familiar 10-centimeter-long, cylindrical, yellow-orange catkins the following spring. The female flowers are smaller, 2–3 centimeters long, and greenish in color.
The birch is a popular avenue tree and is often used as a "maypole." Birch wood is used as timber and firewood. It is used for furniture and interior design. Birch wood is the basis for particleboard, plywood, and fiberboard.
